Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge begins operation
The inauguration of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge which held today has once again put Lagos and Nigeria in the fore of development progress, as the first cable stayed bridge in Nigeria and West Africa.
The Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge is to be one of the first major cable stayed bridges to be built in West Africa. The bridge which has a total length of 1.358km comprising of 722m approach, 466m main bridge and 170m cable length (suspended section) is designed to service and provide access to road around Elegushi roundabout and Lekki phase one axis linking bourdillion Road, Ikoyi
According to the Honourable Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, in his welcome address, “the bridge is a continuation of this administration’s commitment to provide qualitative infrastructure that is functionally creative and which is highly reflective of the vision driving development of the state”.
He mentioned that the idea of the bridge was conceived in 2008 and it provides the standard megacity compliance facility.
His Excellency, Governor of Lagos state, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, who was present at the inauguration, declared the handover of the link bridge and mentioned in his speech that the bridge would be open for operation on the first of June 2013. He also acknowledged the roles of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure under the leadership of Engineer Ganiyu Johnson when the project started, who was also present at the event and under the leadership of Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat who supervised the project to completion.
Users of the bridge would have to pay a toll each way at rate of N250 for salon cars, N300 for Mini- Van, SUV’s and Light Pick-Up Trucks, N100 for motorcycles and N400 for non-commercial buses with a maximum seating capacity of twenty-six persons.
Other dignitaries present at the event include, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire, President OF NSE, Engr. Mustapha Balarabe Shehu(FNSE) , Members of the State Executive Councils and Royal Fathers of the State.
