The Lagos-Badagry expressway has been a bane to the people of its environ for years because of the traffic; the recent announcement by the Lagos state government to allocate 20 percent of this year’s budget to works and infrastructure in and around the state is a relief to the people, who have had to struggle with bad roads and incessant traffic for so long.
The expansion of the road from its current size of four lanes to ten lanes with a light rail that extends to the Lagos island axis is believed to be a potential economic opener for the state to neighboring West African countries.
Olufemi Hamzat, the Lagos state commissioner for Works and Infrastructure has assured Lagosians that despite the slow progress of the roads reconstruction, the Fashola-led administration will deliver the project before 2015.
Hamzat who was speaking on the 2014 state budget recently signed by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola says the government will continue to give the road priority attention. He however noted this project involves two major aspects which is the integration of road and rail but says they are irrevocably committed to delivering this road before the end of our tenure. He added that with 2014 already winding down; all efforts would be geared towards completing 300 projects currently embarked on by the state with his ministry getting 20% of the 2014 budget.
He also hinted that the state has pledged to leverage on its Strategic Inner Roads Development Programme to link communities and redevelop more roads across the state with a minimum life span of 15 years. These inner-city roads number over 1,000.
The Lagos state government has emphasized the need to prioritize in consideration of the traffic capacity, the connectivity and also the ability to properly discharge and drain the road. There is a massive rehabilitation and maintenance work by the Public Works Corporation going on all around Lagos.
